Last time out: USD hit a school-record 15 3-pointers Wednesday night in a 96-92 WCC win over Washington State at Jenny Craig Pavilion. Junior guard Ty-Laur Johnson went 12-for-18 from the floor and finished with a career-high 28 points plus seven assists and three steals. Johnson now leads the WCC in scoring. Tim Moore Jr. scored 13 points against the Cougars, while guards Toneari Lane and Juanse Gorosito and forward Vuk Boskovic scored 12 points apiece off the bench. Lane was 4-for-5 from 3-point range and Vuk Boskovic was 4-for-6 as the Toreros went 15-for-28 from beyond the arc. The Toreros had only six turnovers. Gavin Ripp scored USD’s final seven points.
Series history: Santa Clara leads the all-time series 58-41 and has won the past five meetings.
Toreros update: USD is 8-4 at home but only 1-8 away from “The Slim Gym.” The Toreros have won two straight games after going 1-5 in their previous six games. Johnson and Moore each had their playing time against Washington State reduced by foul trouble. Assane Diop had seven rebounds and Ripp six as USD outrebounded WSU 36-34. Johnson leads USD in scoring (15.8 points per game), assists (84) and steals (43). Gorosito (10.8 ppg), Lane (10.5) and Adrian McIntyre (9.1) follow Johnson in scoring. Thirteen Toreros have made at least one start.
Broncos update: Santa Clara is tied with Saint Mary’s for second place in the WCC standings behind 8-0 Gonzaga. Santa Clara has won three straight games since losing 89-77 at Gonzaga, most recently defeating the Gaels 62-54 last weekend. Guard Christian Hammond leads Santa Clara in scoring, averaging 16.9 points a game while shooting 51% from the floor. Forward Elijah Mahi is averaging 14.4 points and 4.7 rebounds a game while shooting 46.3%. The Broncos’ 7-foot-1 center, Bukky Oboye, is averaging 8.5 points and 4.1 rebounds in just 18 minutes per game.
