Point Loma High School’s Romeo Carter is a three-star prospect at wide receiver who has committed to play college football at Boise State.

Westview High School’s Matthew Guimond is a little-touted quarterback who is hoping a strong senior season attracts the attention of college recruiters.

Both opened eyes Friday with record-setting performances.

Carter caught seven passes for 214 yards and six touchdowns in Friday’s 55-26 win over Madison, tied for the most in CIF San Diego Section history. Joe Mange of Holtville did it in 1999. The 6-foot-3, 185-pound senior has 44 catches for 781 yards and 16 touchdowns this season.

In three varsity seasons, Carter has 114 catches for 2,045 yards and 23 TDs.

Guimond, who checks in at 6-1 and 185 pounds, threw touchdown passes of 90 and 91 yards in Friday’s 35-7 win over Vista. He’s believed to be the only quarterback in San Diego Section history to have two 90-yard TDs in the same game.

“And they came on back-to-back throws,” said Westview coach Mitch Donnelly.

The first was a screen to Miles Miranda, who weaved his way 90 yards through the Vista defense for the score.

After holding Vista, Guimond found Evan Carter on a deep throw that covered 91 yards. Guimond, who completed 10 of 14 passes for 332 yards, also hit Kyler Brown with a 50-yard scoring pass.

Guimond transferred to Westview from Cathedral Catholic last season. He has completed 103 of 174 passes for 1,757 yards and 17 TDs this season. He has been intercepted six times.

“Matty is a really good quarterback, but he was behind Brady Palmer at Cathedral Catholic and was never going to play,” Donnelly said. “He lives near our school, knew a lot of our players, knew we threw the ball and decided to come here.

“There are so many good quarterbacks in the county this season so I don’t know if he can be an All-CIF player. But I think he can play in the Alex Spanos All-Star Game where Division 2 and Division 3 colleges can get a look at him.

“He wants to play in college, and the Spanos game would give him a nice showcase.”
