BART experienced a major systemwide delay for more than three hours Monday morning due to an equipment problem on the track in the Transbay Tube, officials said.

Between 6 a.m. and just after 9 a.m. there was no Red or Green line service as trains were using one track to get through the tube. The Red Line runs between Richmond and Millbrae and the Green Line from Daly City to Berryessa/North San Jose.

BART officials said at 9:27 a.m. that regular service had resumed through the tube and the Red and Green lines were operating normally.

Officials did not immediately specify the nature of the equipment problem.

Blue and Yellow line service was not impacted, officials said. The Blue line runs between Daly city and Dublin/Pleasanton and the Yellow line between Antioch and the San Francisco International Airport.

The problem, which was near the Embarcadero Station in San Francisco, was first reported about 6:09 a.m. Monday.

BART was advising riders of transfer alternatives.

BART has had other significant delays in the last few months.

On Sept. 5, the entire system shut down before the 5 a.m. opening and remained closed until about 9:25 a.m. because of a computer network issue. On May 9 the entire BART system was out of service for nearly five hours, with the shutdown being blamed on a network conncectivity problem that prevented controllers from seeing train locations on the tracks, making safe operation of the system impossible, officials said at the time.
