Philip Rivers has informed the Buffalo Bills he is withdrawing from consideration for the team’s head-coaching job, two people with knowledge of the decision told The Associated Press. The people spoke on condition of anonymity because the talks were private. The Athletic first reported the news. The 44-year-old quarterback, who came out of retirement last month and started three games with the Indianapolis Colts, interviewed with the Bills on Friday. Buffalo’s search process began Wednesday, two days after Sean McDermott was fired following a nine-year tenure. Including Rivers, Buffalo has met with seven candidates.

Swiss champion Basel has fired coach Ludovic Magnin three days before a decisive game in the final round of the Europa League. Magnin was ousted one day after a 4-3 win at its traditional rival Zurich was sealed by star forward Xherdan Shaqiri, who completed a hat trick in stoppage time. A 3-1 loss at Salzburg last Thursday in the Europa League had pushed the former Switzerland left-back toward the exit after just seven months. Basel is fourth in the Swiss league, trailing 10 points behind leader Thun. Basel is 27th in the 36-team Europa League standings before hosting unbeaten Viktoria Plzeň.
A coroner has found that repeatedly heading a soccer ball “likely” contributed to the brain injury that was a factor in the death of former Manchester United and Scotland defender Gordon McQueen. McQueen died in June 2023 at the age of 70. The cause of death was given as pneumonia after he became frail and bed-bound for months. In his conclusions following an inquest, coroner Jon Heath says McQueen died from pneumonia as a consequence of mixed vascular dementia and chronic traumatic encephalopathy. CTE is a neurodegenerative disease linked to repeated head trauma.
Giovanni Franzoni is host Italy’s new skiing standout for the Milan Cortina Winter Olympics. Franzoni won the downhill on the legendary Streif course in Kitzbühel over the weekend to follow up his first World Cup win a week earlier in Wengen. He had never even been on the World Cup podium until he finished third in a super-G in Val Gardena last month. Now he’s among the favorites for the Olympic downhill on the first full day of the Games on Feb. 7. Franzoni once raced against tennis star Jannik Sinner in a junior race and they recently got back in touch.
Switzerland has left 44-year-old ski-jumping great Simon Ammann out of a team of 175 athletes picked for the Milan Cortina Olympics that includes three defending champions. At the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics, Ammann was a double gold medalist whose Harry Potter-like spectacles and boyish charm led to him being a studio guest on David Letterman’s late-night show. Ammann has competed at all seven Winter Games since 1998 in Nagano, Japan. He also won two gold medals at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics. Switzerland’s standout star is now Alpine skier Marco Odermatt.

DALLAS — Nearly a year after the most devastating decision in Dallas sports history it remains more than a little surreal to see Luka Doncic in purple and gold at American Airlines Center. This will likely be so for his third and fourth and 15th return, even if the life of a Laker suits him …

Qatar has scored a win in Olympic politics, with the emirate also aiming to host the 2036 Summer Games. Olympic Council of Asia members elected Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani as their president to complete the term in office of Randir Singh of India. Singh had stepped down for health reasons. Sheikh Joaan was the only candidate and received 44 of the 45 votes. His term runs to 2028. Qatar’s influence in Olympic circles is growing as the IOC reflects on how to choose the 2036 host. India and Qatar have been seen as the strongest bidders.
Lucas Pinheiro Braathen represents Brazil in Alpine skiing and he has a chance to win South America’s first Winter Olympics medal next month. Known for his vibrant personality, he combines Brazilian energy with Norwegian discipline. His father introduced him to skiing and supports his decision to represent Brazil.
Jannik Sinner may have felt lucky to survive the Australian Open third round but he has rebounded quickly in a straight-sets win over fellow Italian Luciano Darderi to reach the quarterfinals for a ninth consecutive Grand Slam event. The two-time defending champion struggled with the extreme heat and cramping in his Saturday afternoon win over No. 85-ranked Eliot Spizzirri and only took control after the roof was closed in the third set. In an evening match in cooler conditions, Sinner was cruising until Darderi lifted his tempo in the third set. Second-ranked Sinner missed match points on Darderi’s serve in the 10th game but then clinched victory 6-1, 6-3, 7-6.
