A sweeping internet outage affected businesses and customers across the country on Monday, Oct. 20, including some right here in the Central Valley.
The outage, originating with Amazon Web Services (AWS), has affected a number of businesses and services such as InstaCart, Lyft, Hulu and Prime Video. Social media apps including Snapchat and Reddit and software-as-service programs such as Microsoft 365, Adobe Creative Cloud and Microsoft Teams were also affected.
The outage, which left mobile customers with carriers including Verizon without cell service or internet, was first reported at 3:11 a.m. Eastern Time, and affected 14 different service centers on the East Coast. As of this morning, AWS reported that the outage had been “fully mitigated,” but notified users of further delays.
“The root cause is an underlying internal subsystem responsible for monitoring the health of our network load balancers,” the company said in a statement at 11:43 a.m. ET. The company confirmed that the outage was not the result of a cyberattack.
Locally, several businesses and organizations felt the pain this morning; Tamera Trindade, a practicing attorney with offices in Redding and Fresno, shared on X that services from MyCaseInc, which provides legal software for billing and case management, were down as of 9:20 a.m. Monday.
Fresno Housing also reported a temporary system and portal outage on Facebook, notifying readers that systems including Voyager, RentCafe, Site Manager and VendorCafe had been unavailable.
“This outage is temporarily impacting residents, landlords, and vendors, and the ability to log in to the portal or communicate through online channels,” the post reads. “Please know our team is monitoring the situation closely.”
Social media comments also note that some online school services are also unavailable due to the outage.
Applications began to come back online as of 10 a.m., but AWS noted that errors were still affecting services and that it is working to restore connectivity.
The last outage to affect services nationwide took place in July 2024, when CrowdStrike services experienced a glitch in software causing major outages that disrupted everything from media and payment services to air travel.
Monday’s AWS outage also affected travel for some airlines across the country, with Delta Air Lines and United Airlines affecting travelers’ ability to access flight check-ins. Fresno-Yosemite International Airport has not experienced delays due to the outage.
