For the ninth consecutive year. Blue Shield of California and Blue Shield of California Promise Health Plan proudly sponsored the Los Angeles Martin Luther King Day Parade on Jan. 19, the nation’s largest celebration honoring the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
This year’s theme, “Reclaiming the Dream,” inspired thousands of Angelenos to gather in South Los Angeles for a day of unity, reflection and community pride. Organized by the Los Angeles Sentinel and Bakewell Media, the parade featured vibrant floats, live performers, youth groups and community organizations, all united in honoring Dr. King’s dream for justice and equality.
“Dr. King’s vision reminds us that lasting progress begins with strong, connected communities,” said Shannon Datcher, Blue Shield’s vice president of corporate law and deputy general counsel, and executive advisor of the organization’s Black Employee Network. “At Blue Shield and Blue Shield Promise, we work every day to expand access to affordable, high-quality health care for all. Together, we honor Dr. King’s legacy by investing in and advocating for the health and well-being of the communities we serve.”
Blue Shield of California and Blue Shield Promise’s sponsorship of the parade reflects their shared commitment to improving the health and well-being of Californians. Blue Shield Promise, part of Blue Shield of California, serves approximately 560,000 Medi-Cal members across Los Angeles and San Diego counties. In partnership with L.A. Care Health Plan, Blue Shield Promise jointly operates 14 Community Resource Centers throughout Los Angeles County, including centers in South Los Angeles, Inglewood and Lynwood. These centers offer an array of free health-focused services, wellness programs and vital social services such as housing and food resources — open to everyone in the community.
These efforts in Los Angeles are part of the nonprofit health plan’s mission to transform health care across California, ensuring every community has access to care that is affordable, high-quality and worthy of our families and friends. The LA Martin Luther King Day Parade highlights the enduring importance of community, a value deeply rooted in Blue Shield of California’s mission. Honoring Dr. King’s legacy means transforming ideals into action, and Blue Shield remains committed to building a healthier California for generations to come.
“Supporting the Martin Luther King Day Parade is more than a tradition — it’s a reflection of our values and a promise to stand with our communities,” said Kristen Cerf, president and CEO of Blue Shield Promise. “Helping ensure individuals have access to the care and resources to help them live healthier lives is central to our mission. We remain committed to breaking down barriers, expanding access and building a healthcare system that truly serves everyone, everywhere. This work is ongoing, and we will continue to partner with our communities to create a healthier future for all.”
