The San Diego FC team is eying a long playoff run after a dominant inaugural regular season.
SAN DIEGO — San Diego FC Head Coach Mikey Varas expressed confidence heading into the postseason following a strong regular season campaign, stating the squad is prepared to make a deep playoff run in their inaugural season if they maintain consistency and discipline.
“We’re very confident, because that’s how you’ve worked all of these months to get to this point,” said Varas. “If we stay consistent, we stick to our principles, we have discipline and commitment towards the collective, and what we’ve done and what the players have committed to in terms of the work, we know that every game will have a chance, and that gives you confidence.”
The team recently secured a dominant 4-0 victory over Portland, a performance the manager credited to player maturity and control.Â
“It was an amazing performance from the players, really mature, showed a lot of consistency throughout a match in a really great atmosphere. The environment was amazing from their [Portland] fans, and I think it was just a fantastic performance to control what we could control, and put us in a position to be where we’re at,” said Varas.
Heading into the postseason, the team has a favorable recent record against both potential opponents, having defeated Salt Lake twice while recording a draw and a win against Portland.
The playoff format will begin with a best-of-three series before advancing to single-elimination matches. The manager supports the multi-game series structure.Â
“I think 2 out of 3 is fine. It shows that you got to play at home, you got to play away, and if you’re able to take care of business in both of those places, you move on,” said Mikey.
After 10 months together, the manager expressed particular pride in the team’s cohesion and identity.Â
“If there’s anything I’m proud of, 10 months into this project, the group has an identity. They have a feeling for each other and for the fans that’s real and authentic and deep,” said Mikey.
