BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — The Bakersfield City School District’s Board of Education members are considering giving themselves a big raise, according to the meeting agenda for Tuesday.
School board members who attend all board meetings receive monthly stipends as compensation.

BCSD Board members now receive $787 per month. A revision to a bylaw would increase monthly compensation for each member to $3,000, nearly quadrupling their current stipends, according to school district officials.
In October, the California Legislature increased the stipend amounts to catch up with inflation, according to the agenda.
According to the agenda, the Board members’ responsibilities and time commitments have increased significantly, but stipend levels remained unchanged for over 40 years.
The BCSD Board is seeking to amend a bylaw titled “Remuneration, Reimbursement and Other Benefits,” the agenda said. This is to align with AB 1390 and allow Board members to receive the approved monthly stipend.
The stipend amount depends on how many children are in the school district. There were 26,474 kids attending BCSD’s 44 schools last year, making the Board’s stipend level $3,000 under the bill.

If the attendance numbers drop below 25,000, BCSD Board members’ monthly compensation would also be reduced to $2,000, according to officials.
The change would go into effect this month, school district officials said.
The Board is set to consider this revision during its meeting at 6 p.m. at 1300 Baker Street.
