Nurses in Sacramento gathered on the 48th Street overpass of Highway 50 Wednesday to protest the death of Alex Pretti, an ICU nurse who was shot and killed by border patrol agents in Minneapolis, as part of a nationwide demonstration organized by National Nurses United. They honored Pretti, who was remembered for his dedication to protecting and caring for others. “Alex was doing his job as a citizen and a nurse to protect and care for others,” Sarah Peters said. The overpass in Sacramento is a common spot for groups to gather and share messages with passing cars, but organizers noted that this was the largest group they had seen, with dozens joining from the California Nurses Association. “As nurses, just like Alex, we will be out here standing in solidarity with our community,” Melissa Beebe said. “It behooves us all to come together and love and care for one another. The way that Alex was trying to do,” Peters said. “His last words were, ‘Are you okay?’ to somebody that he was standing in the way of getting pepper-sprayed in the face. He was shielding her from getting hurt. And that’s what we all do is just try to help. No matter who you are or where you come from,” Rebecca McDaniel added. This demonstration was one of many across the country as the nation’s largest union of registered nurses called for justice for Pretti and took a stand against the immigration crackdown. In addition to the Sacramento protest, there was also a demonstration at Kaiser’s Roseville location.See more coverage of top California stories here | Download our app | Subscribe to our morning newsletter | Find us on YouTube here and subscribe to our channel
