Thee Parkside, a beloved Potrero Hill bar and punk venue, is going to close. The bar announced its impending closure in an Instagram post on Tuesday night.
Photos and a video shared on Instagram show the wall of Thee Parkside’s patio newly spray painted in red and black paint: “This will be condos you can’t afford!”
For years, Thee Parkside has served a cross section of San Francisco’s subcultures, hosting punk shows, motorcycle meetups and karaoke nights. It’s one of a handful of the city’s small, independent venues, and cherished by the local music scene. On a typical night, a mix of young and older patrons gather in the bar’s patio area, downing beers and chatting over bar food.
After the bar’s announcement, San Francisco’s punk scene mourned the news.
“Loosing an immensely important club like Parkside is like a death in the family,” Thrillhouse Records, a punk record store, wrote in a social media post. “The brutality of capitalism has left SF with a limited amount of places to throw punk shows. And anytime our handful of show spaces shrinks, we really feel it. Parkside wasn’t ‘just’ a show space, it is one of our best.”
For months, the bar’s future has been uncertain. The previous owner of the building housing Thee Parkside, Maria Gloria Rando, died last year. The bar’s owner, Malia Spanyol, had first rights to buy the building, but was outbid by a developer who offered nearly $1.33 million. In August of 2025, she told Mission Local that she was worried the bar would have “no future” under its new owner, who she feared would demolish the building.
“If they’re dicks, they could kick me out right away,” she told the outlet at the time.
Now, it seems those fears have come to fruition. Thee Parkside’s Instagram post claims that its building will be demolished to make way for condos. The bar’s exact closure date is unknown, according to the social media post. Thee Parkside is scheduled to throw its last shows in March.
The news arrives weeks after Bottom of the Hill, another beloved independent venue, announced plans to close at the end of the year, ending a 35-year run. Bottom of the Hill is located just down the street from Thee Parkside. With both venues gone, the otherwise quiet stretch of 17th Street could be much quieter.
“This neighborhood will be pretty boring with both us and Bottom Of The Hill gone, but I feel like we’re just one more small business dying in this city: the culture, the ‘weirdos’, the arts, the working class are all going to be gone,” the bar wrote in a social media post. “The third spaces that once thrived will be replaced with bland and expensive corporations or will sit vacant.”
