The San Jose Earthquakes have completed their biggest move in the team’s history, signing RB Leipzig forward Timo Werner as a designated player through June 2028, the MLS club announced Thursday.

Werner, 29, joins the Quakes after a commendable European career, which included stints with Premier League giant Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur and most recently at RB Leipzig.

“It’s always a big decision to go to America, but everything is there to be successful,” Werner said in a statement.

Internationally, Werner has scored 24 goals in 57 caps for Germany. He featured at the 2018 FIFA World Cup and UEFA Euro 2020.

Werner, who has tallied 153 goals and 86 assists in 449 professional appearances since debuting for boyhood club VfB Stuttgart in 2013, has lifted seven trophies across club and country, including the 2021 UEFA Champions League and 2021 FIFA Club World Cup.

The former Germany international slots in as the Quakes’ top attacking threat after the club lost both Josef Martínez and Cristian Espinoza to free agency and with Cristian Arango rumored to be making a move to Colombian giant Atlético Nacional.
