A 59-vehicle collision forced the closure of Highway 99 in Tulare County on Saturday afternoon, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Ten injured people were taken to area hospitals, the CHP said. One person sustained a moderate injury, including a laceration to the forehead, while the others reported minor injuries or complaints of pain.

The CHP said it suspected fog was a factor, noting visibility of 100 to 200 feet during the crashes. The CHP established detours to reroute drivers.

Motorists were advised to slow down, increase their following distance and remain alert.

The CHP estimated the highway would reopen between 4 and 5 p.m. Saturday as it cleared the wreckage.
