Cal State Northridge handed UC San Diego’s men’s basketball team its third straight loss Saturday.
Sinking 45% of their shot attempts and grabbing 13 more rebounds than the Tritons, Northridge won 81-64 after leading 41-28 at intermission. The Matadors outscored UCSD 16-3 over the final 5 ½ minutes of the first half.
The Tritons pulled to within three at 45-42 on Cade Pendleton’s 3-pointer with just under 15 minutes to play but never got closer.
UCSD, which is 5-7 since opening the season 10-1, fell to 5-6 in Big West Conference play. Northridge is now 13-10 overall and 6-5 in the Big West.
Freshman Hudson Mayes came off the bench to lead UCSD with 11 points, eight rebounds and five assists. Forward Leo Beath had 10 points and seven rebounds, and guard Alex Chaikin added 10 points of his own. Bol Dengdit had nine points, six rebounds and two blocks.
USD loses in OT
USD (10-14, 4-7) lost 78-76 in overtime to Oregon State Saturday afternoon at the Jenny Craig Pavilion after leading 59-49 with less than two minutes left in regulation. While the Beavers (12-12, 5-6) closed on a 10-1 run, USD went 0 for 2 from the floor, 1 for 2 from the foul line and turned the ball over twice.
Oregon State then outscored the Toreros 18-16 in the extra session, building up a 78-73 lead with 10 seconds to go.
Adrian McIntyre paced USD with 21 points. Forwards Assane Diop (13 points, eight rebounds) and Tim Moore Jr. (11 points, seven rebounds) led the way in the paint. Ty-Laur Johnson had nine points, seven assists and three steals before fouling out for a second straight game.
USD turned the ball over 20 times. The Toreros trailed 30-25 at halftime, then went on a 20-7 run to start the second half.
