BAKERSFIELD, Calif.(KBAK/KBFX) — Effective Feb. 9, 2026, Kern County Public Works will open a temporary Tehachapi Transfer Station to address the solid waste handling needs of residential and commercial customers as the Tehachapi Sanitary Landfill approaches its waste capacity, said officials.
Due to operational limitations at the temporary facility, certain waste materials and load types will be redirected to the Bena Landfill or Mojave-Rosamond Landfill.
The Solid Waste division is designing a new permanent transfer station for the Tehachapi community, expected to be operational in 2028. While there may be temporary increases in wait times, no additional fees will be applied, and current gate fees will remain unchanged. Monthly Household Hazardous Waste Collection Events will continue as scheduled at the temporary location.
The Tehachapi Transfer Station will be located at the same address as the current landfill – 12001 East Tehachapi Boulevard. The original site has been open since 1973.
