LA JOLLA, Calif. – Senior Megan Holcomb scored a career-high four times to lead the 19th-ranked San Diego State water polo team to a 19-5 demolition of the Concordia (CUI) Eagles at Canyonview Pool on Sunday afternoon in its final game at the Triton Invitational.

With the victory the Aztecs finished 2-2 and in 11th place in the tournament, one of the most stacked tournaments in the nation with 13 of the 16 teams competing ranked in the top 25, including six in the top 10, and three in the top 5.

In addition to Holcomb’s record setting day, Hannah Bell, Sammi Byers, Sydney Gish and Mimi Stoupas each bent the net twice while Natalia Barrot, Lucy Bullock, Mackenzie Dollander, Shannon Murphy, Ioanna Petiki, Julianne Stark and Avery Sullivan scored once each. Murphy and Kyla Pranajaya led the team assisting on three goals apiece, while Petiki, Stark and Mandy Lagerlof totaled two assists each.

Lagerlof (4-2) played the first half, made two saves, allowed three goals and the aforementioned two assists in earning the victory. Pranajaya was in the cage in the second half and had three saves, surrendered two goals and a career-best three assists.

The Aztecs led 5-2 after eight minutes and never looked back. Thirty-four seconds in, Bullock got the Aztecs (5-4) the first goal of the game and Concordia tied it 1-1 with 3:40 to play. SDSU then ripped off a hat trick of goals from Bell at 3:18, Byers at 2:28, and Stark with 47 seconds left in the period to make it a 4-1 lead. The Eagles got one back with 13 seconds on the clock, but Sullivan scored with just one tick left to push it back to a three-goal lead, 5-2.

CUI (2-4) would cut the deficit to 5-3 on the first tally of the second quarter, but that was as close as it would get. For the second time in the half, SDSU would score three unanswered, this time to close the first 16 minutes. Petiki bent the net at 5:50, followed, 30 seconds later, by Gish, and Bell, on her second goal of the game, completed the run with a goal with 42 seconds to play in the half to send the game to the break with the Scarlet and Black up 8-3.

Out of the intermission, Byers’ second goal, at 5:03, pushed the advantage to 9-3 before the Eagles scored a minute later. It was the last goal CUI would tally for the next 11:13 while the Aztecs put 10 goals on the board.

Holcomb scored a hat trick up in a minute and four seconds in the third period to make it 12-4. The goals came at 2:41, 2:06 and 1:37. Stoupas then got her first of the day with eight seconds remaining in the third to send the game to the final eight minutes with SDSU staked to a 13-4 advantage.

The goals kept coming in the fourth quarter. Gish, at 6:39, scored her second goal, her fifth of the weekend, and is now five away from reaching the 100-career goal milestone. Stoupas tallied her second of the contest at 5:31, followed by Barrot at 4:55, Holcomb at 3:12, Murphy at 2:39 and Dollander got the team’s final goal, on her birthday, to make it 19-4. Concordia picked up a meaningless strike with 50 seconds on the clock for the final score of 19-5.

Five Eagles accounted for the team’s five goals. Marilyn Rodriguez-Garcia de Leon played the entire game in the net and had eight saves against 19 goals allowed, with an assist.
