(FOX40.COM) — A 59-year-old man from Woodland was arrested in Sacramento last week in connection with a 2024 fatal hit-and-run crash in Long Beach.

According to the Long Beach Police Department, the suspect was driving on Dec. 26, 2024, when he ran a red light and crashed into the victim’s car. The victim declined medical attention at the scene of the crash but self-transported herself to the hospital later that same day. The suspect briefly got out of his car but then drove away, police said.

On Jan. 6, 2025, the victim, identified as 78-year-old Long Beach resident Nikki Rash, died.

Through the use of security camera footage and Automatic License Plate Reader technology, detectives identified the suspect as 59-year-old resident of Woodland, Mario Jesus Escobar Acosta.

The U.S. Marshals Service in Sacramento arrested Escobar Acosta on Jan. 26, 2026, police said. He was taken to Long Beach City Jail, where he was booked for hit-and-run resulting in death/injury on a $50,000 bail.
