Re “How ICE abused local woman with legal status” (Jan. 29): I was furious that the deplorable tactics described in this essay have become common in our democratic society. My thoughts turned to two Ethiopian immigrants, mother and daughter, whom my husband and I mentored on their journey to U.S. citizenship some years ago.

I coached the mother in memorizing answers to civics questions in preparation for her citizenship test. I clearly remember one question in particular, “What is the rule of law?” The correct answer is: Everyone must follow the law. Leaders must obey the law. Government must obey the law. No one is above the law.

As their inhumane treatment of immigrants clearly attests, ICE agents choose to ignore the rule of law as do our president and members of his administration.

American democracy is in grave peril as we approach the observation of our 250th anniversary.
