Liberty Station is marking 250 years of America – and its own deep naval legacy – with specialty programming throughout 2026. The former Naval Training Center operated as a 600-acre training ground from 1923 to 1997, training nearly two million Navy recruits and one million A and C school sailors before transitioning into the 361-acre lifestyle destination we know today.

This year, Liberty Station is honoring that history with military-inspired public art, a community-wide celebration, and patriotic branding across the property.

“The Guardian – Wings of Sacrifice” Art Installation

Early this year, Liberty Station is unveiling a public art installation created in collaboration with veteran and acclaimed artist Joe Pisano, supported by the Resurrecting Lives Foundation.

The Guardian – Wings of Sacrifice” is made from 2,500 military dog tags and other creative materials, serving as a visual tribute to the U.S. Navy’s 250 years of service, courage, and sacrifice.

The piece will be displayed in the Arts District at Liberty Station and includes a commemorative plaque with a QR code linking to Liberty Station’s NTC Alumni Video series, where visitors can hear firsthand accounts from veterans who trained on the property.

Anchored in Freedom: An Independence Day Celebration

Liberty Station is hosting Anchored in Freedom – a free community-wide celebration presented in partnership with Love Thy Neighborhood. The event features a patriotic parade throughout Liberty Station with themed floats honoring freedom, service, and community.

It’s designed to bring neighbors, families, and visitors together for a tribute to America’s founding and the generations of service members who trained at Liberty Station.

A Living Tribute to Naval Veterans

Laurie Albrecht, director of Liberty Station Community Association, put it well: “Liberty Station is not just a destination; it is a living tribute to the brave men and women who have defended our freedoms for the past 250 years.

As we celebrate the Navy’s Semiquincentennial, we are honored to bring our community together to recognize the sacrifices, triumphs and unbreakable spirit that define our nation. Here, where naval heroes once trained to protect our shores, we are creating unforgettable moments that connect past, present and future.”

Connecting Past, Present, and Future

Liberty Station has always been more than just a place to grab food or see art – it’s a site with real history, where generations of sailors trained before heading out to serve.

This year’s programming connects that legacy to the present, making sure the stories and sacrifices of those who came through here aren’t forgotten.
