FRESNO, Calif. (FOX26) — A freshman volleyball player is racking up points and making starts in almost every Fresno State match this season.
Brooklyn Washington has recorded the 3rd-most points (98.5) and kills (62) on the team, while patrolling the net as a middle blocker.
The Clovis East HS grad is having a breakout campaign, but it’s par for the course in a Washington family of former Bulldogs.
Brooklyn’s father Raymond played cornerback for Fresno State football teams from 2002-05, earning an invite to Oakland Raiders training camp.
Her mother Megan competed in track & field and cross country as a Bulldog from 2001-02.
Brooklyn never felt pressured to follow in their footsteps. Her parents implored that she follow her heart instead.
Yet, growing up around her parents’ trophies and medals left an impression on Washington, who saw the value in sharing something in common with them.
“They were able to share with me their experiences [at] Fresno State… being athletes as well as students,” said Washington. “We all kind of relate on that and connect with that… That’s something that’s very powerful to have, and not a lot of people have it, so I’m super grateful.”
