The San Francisco Unified School District is closed for the second straight day on Tuesday as teachers continue to strike for higher wages and better health benefits.

According to the district, it had delivered over 2,655 Independent Study packets to community sites by Tuesday morning. Digital Independent Study packets are also available at sfusd.edu. Another 1,000 students attended education programs given by community-based organizations that provide after-school programs at SFUSD schools.

The Department of Children, Youth and Families distributed more than 2,300 meals to at least 30 sites on Monday, according to the district. On Tuesday, the department plans to deliver more than 3,000 meals across at least 42 sites.

Temporary child care is provided by the San Francisco Department of Early Childhood for students younger than 5 who are enrolled in SFUSD transitional kindergarten or preschool classes.

The United Educators of San Francisco, which represents 6,000 teachers, counselors, nurses and paraeducators, is asking for a 9% salary increase and 100% paid health benefits. District officials say SFUSD, which has been under state fiscal oversight since 2024, cannot afford the proposed increase.

The district and union have been at an impasse over contract negotiations since October. Negotiations continued on Monday during the first day of the strike, but no agreement was reached.

“We understand the strain that school closures place on families, and we will continue to update our website regularly with up-to-date information and community resources,” district officials said in a statement. “We are grateful for the support of so many partners around the city who have been working around the clock to provide food and other resources to our students and families.”

Tuesday night’s SFUSD school board meeting has also been cancelled.
