San Diego’s three NCAA Division I baseball teams got off to strong starts over the weekend.

San Diego State opened its baseball season with a three-game sweep of Long Island University at Tony Gwynn Stadium in coach Kevin Vance’s debut.

Center fielder Adam Magpoc, a junior transfer from Boston College, was 6-for-12 in the three games with a home run and eight RBIs. Second baseman Dawson Santana, a junior transfer from Oregon State, was 5-for-12 with a home run and six RBIs.

Sophomore right-hander Carson Johnson was named the Mountain West pitcher of the week after allowing one earned run on two hits with 11 strikeouts over seven innings. Utilityman Max Farrell (San Marcos High School) went 5-for-11 to earn freshman of the week honors.

The Aztecs will host the Tony Gwynn Legacy Tournament this weekend, playing crosstown rival University of San Diego next Sunday afternoon.

• USD opened the season by winning two of three games at Charlotte. Alden Howard went 3-for-6 with two triples, two RBIs and three runs scored in the rubber match.

• Junior first baseman Gabe Camacho (La Costa Canyon High) was 4-for-11 with two home runs and four RBIs as UC San Diego won one of three games at No. 1 UCLA. He had a home run and three RBIs as the Tritons won the series finale 8-7.

• Outfielder Tristan Moore has four home runs and 13 RBIs for Division II Point Loma Nazarene, which is 8-3 and has won four in a row.

• Outfielder Jacob Embleton (Granite Hills High) has a home run, seven RBIs and 10 runs scored for Cal State San Marcos, which is 8-1.

• Palomar and Southwestern colleges are both off to 8-2 starts. Elijah Stephens, a 6-foot-7, 245-pound freshman first baseman/left-handed pitcher from Sage Creek High, is hitting .452 for the Comets with three home runs and 13 RBIs. Sophomore outfielder Josh Hughes (Bonita Vista High) is 19-for-38 for Southwestern with three doubles, two triples, two home runs, six RBIs and 13 runs scored.

Softball

UC San Diego is off to a 10-1 start after going 6-0 in the annual UCSD/UCSD Co-Host Tournament. USD is 5-4 after going 2-2 in the tournament.

Infielder Marley Espiau is off to a 15-for-31 start for the Tritons with two home runs and 19 RBIs. First baseman Maalia Cherry is 11-for-20 with two home runs and 11 RBIs. Catcher/outfielder Samantha Womack is 10-for-25 with two homers and 10 RBIs.

Senior Charlie Johnson (Del Norte High) leads USD with a 2-1 record and 1.64 ERA as a pitcher while senior Taylor Johnson is hitting .308 with two home runs and seven RBIs.

• Jade Ignacio was named the Mountain West player of the week for the second straight week and Key-annah Pu’a was the pitcher of the week as host San Diego State (8-2 overall) posted a tourney-best 5-1 record in the Campbell/Cartier Classic.

• Cal State San Marcos (12-1) is ranked third among the nation’s NCAA Division II programs. Senior shortstop Jillian Albayati leads the Cougars with a .575 batting average and 1.746 OPS. Senior outfielder Czar Fleischman is hitting .351 with four homers and 14 RBIs.

• Palomar College is off to a 7-0 start and outscoring opponents 90-10. Lauren Doepping is hitting .692 with four homers and 15 RBIs. Alexis Huey (Poway High) is hitting .762 with four homers and 12 RBIs. Kristina Deal (West Hills High) is batting .688 with one homer and 12 RBIs.

Golf
Sophomore Harry Takis placed second among the individuals at seven-under 203 and the 22nd-ranked San Diego State men’s team placed 10th in the team standings of the John A. Burns Intercollegiate in Hawaii. Aztecs Kai Hirayama and Tyler Kowack (Canyon Crest Academy) tied for 30th.

•   Kylie Phi tied for 11th, Ema Narita was 16th and the Aztecs women finished eighth in the team scoring at the San Diego State Classic women’s tournament at The Heights Golf Club. Manon Martin was 25th and was named the Mountain West freshman of the week for the second straight week.

• Cal State San Marcos’ Liam Weaver (Coronado High) was named the California Collegiate Athletic Association men’s golfer of the week after winning the Cougars’ Fujikura Invitational by seven strokes last week with a 10-under 206 at Shadowridge Golf Club. The Cougars finished second in the team scoring. CSUM’s Gavin McCormick tied for fourth.

Women’s indoor track

San Diego State’s Xiamara Young won the long jump (20 feet, 6½ inches) and triple jump (43-9.2) at the Battle Born Classic in Reno, giving her four wins on the indoor season. Aji Mbye finished second in the 200 meters (23.48 seconds) and reached the finals in the 60 (7.32).

Danielle Patrick (12-2.85) set a Cal State San Marcos record in the pole vault. Nadia Miechowicz posted the second-fastest 200 (24.52) in school history.

Tennis

San Diego State’s Jo-Yee Chan was named the Mountain West women’s player of the week. The Aztecs women are 5-1 in dual meets after a 2-0 week.
