SAN FRANCISCO, CA — A federal judge ordered a 66-year-old nanny, who was arrested by federal immigration agents while on her way to work in San Francisco’s Diamond Heights neighborhood, be released.
The woman is a Russian national who has lived in the United States for more than 12 years, according to media reports. Ghassan Shamieh, a managing immigration attorney representing the
detained woman, said he received a phone call from the woman’s employer at about 9:15 a.m. on Friday.
San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie responded to the incident in a statement posted on X.
“My office is aware of the immigration enforcement action in Diamond Heights earlier today. In line with our city’s longstanding policies, the San Francisco Police Department was not involved and does not assist with federal civil immigration enforcement. That will not change as long as I’m mayor,” he wrote. “Our policies make our communities safer and build trust with law enforcement. Everyone should feel safe reporting a crime, seeking help, or accessing services—regardless of immigration status. I am in touch with the Rapid Response Network and community organizations to ensure communities continue to receive accurate information.”
