Two rafters were rescued Monday from a remote bank along the San Lorenzo River in Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park, authorities said.

The rafters, a man and woman, became stranded following an accident along the river, with no nearby road or trail access, according to Cal Fire. The woman, in her 50s, suffered a moderate injury and as of 3:15 p.m. was being carried out by rescue crews.

The pair were tracked down via a coordinated search after they called 911. Felton firefighters hiked through rough terrain to reach them on the opposite side of the river, Cal Fire said on X.

Rescue swimmers with California State Parks then brought them safely across the river.

“When the river runs high, the conditions change from a relaxing float to a high-stakes environment,” Cal Fire posted on X. “Leave the high-flow navigation to the professionals with the dry suits and specialized training.”

Agencies involved in the rescue effort included CAL FIRE, Santa Cruz County Fire Department, Felton Fire Protection District, California State Parks, and American Medical Rescue.
