Police tape at crime scene

A Sacramento mother was arrested Friday on homicide-related charges in connection with the death of her 3-year-old son at the family’s North Sacramento home a day earlier, authorities said.

Officers were called by firefighters shortly after 12:30 p.m. Thursday to a medical aid call in the 3300 block of Douglas Street near Los Robles Boulevard. Inside the Hagginwood residence, they found the boy suffering from blunt-force trauma, according to the Sacramento Police Department.

Despite lifesaving efforts, the child — identified by the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office as Jeremiah Cash Carter — was pronounced dead at the scene by fire personnel.

Police did not immediately release additional details about the circumstances leading to the child’s injuries, but audio dispatches reviewed by The Sacramento Bee indicated the family had called 911 after the boy suffered a head injury.

Detectives who took over the scene interviewed the boy’s mother, Brianna Mikhela Butcher, 31, before taking her into custody. She was being held without bail at the Sacramento County Main Jail and was expected to be arraigned on one charge of murder Tuesday in Sacramento Superior Court.

Police said anyone with information about the incident was encouraged to call Sacramento police at 916-808-5471 or Sacramento Valley Crime Stoppers at 916-443-4357.
