Re “Historic Spreckels Building, Theatre will be auctioned off” (Feb. 6): With all the valid trepidation of our post-Ash Street world momentarily set aside, could it make sense for the city and San Diego Theatres to jointly acquire the Spreckels Building (at what appears to be a bargain price) as part of the developing proposals for the grand redevelopment of the Civic Center? Based on a standard benchmark of 150 to 200 square feet per person, the five floors of offices could potentially accommodate 630 to 850 city employees — just a three-minute walk from the City Administration Building. San Diego Theatres already manages the Civic and Balboa Theatres; the Spreckels could be an exciting addition to the nonprofit organization’s portfolio.
