Chunks of crumbling concrete strewn along the Santa Monica Channel turned heads during this week’s storm, but one local councilwoman said the issue is being “closely monitored.”
According to a social media post shared Tuesday night by LA City Councilwoman Traci Park, LA County Public Works field engineers said the concrete material spotted in the channel is “a layer of cement installed in the 1970s that has peeled away.”
Park said the slabs of concrete piled up along the channel have reduced channel capacity near the confluence of Rustic Canyon and the Santa Monica Channel by about 15 percent. Still, she assured her constituents that the channel would still be able to handle the flows from this week’s strong winter storms.
Park said city crews won’t be able to remove the slabs until after the storm passes, but for now, the channel remains under close watch.
