Oakland Mayor Barbara Lee’s city-owned SUV was stolen this week after the thief apparently swiped the keys from Lee’s office at City Hall, according to the spokesman for the Oakland Police Officers Association, who cited preliminary police reports.
The vehicle, a Ford Expedition, was later recovered in Vallejo, Oakland POA spokesman Sam Singer said. The details of the theft were corroborated by two other people familiar with the incident.
Preliminary reports said the door to Lee’s office appeared to have been tampered with, and that investigators believe the keys were taken on Monday, the Presidents Day holiday. Officials discovered that the car was missing the following day, according to two of the sources.
Oakland police, who were investigating the incident, have not yet made any arrests but have identified a suspect and have a warrant out for their arrest, according to Singer and another person familiar with the investigation.
One source, who spoke on the condition of anonymity in accordance with the Chronicle’s policies, said the suspect was identified partly through security footage taken from City Hall, and that the vehicle was tracked to Vallejo after it was driven out of the City Hall parking garage.
Oakland police and a spokesperson for Lee did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
