CIF San Diego Section Masters Meets
When and where: Boys wrestle Friday and Saturday at Olympian High School, with finals scheduled for noon or later Saturday. Girls wrestle Saturday at Eastlake High School, with finals scheduled for 5 p.m. or later.
At stake: The top four boys and the top three girls in each weight class advance to the state meet, which begins Thursday in Bakersfield. The San Diego Section will fill any voids left vacant by the Oakland Section.
BOYS
Defending team champion: Poway
Individual Masters champions returning: Julius Villamil (Poway, 106 pounds), Rene Cordero (Poway, 113), Ames-Michael Hoevker (Granite Hills, 138), Carlos Valdiviezo (Poway, 150), Bailey Holman (Poway, 157), Daniel Moylan (Poway, 285).
Notable: San Diego Section Division 1 champion Granite Hills and Division 2 champion Poway advanced a full lineup. Rancho Bernardo will have 13 wrestlers at Masters, with Brawley bringing 12. Possible matchups to look for: No. 9 Cash McClurg (Granite Hills) vs. No. 11 Wyatt Carnrite (Poway) in the battle of freshmen at 103; No. 8 Villamil (Poway) vs. No. 20 Shane Ito (La Costa Canyon) in a rematch of last year’s 113 final; No. 4 Diego Valdiviezo (Poway) vs. No. 8 Hoevker (Granite Hills) at 144; undefeated No. 5 Holman (Poway) vs. No. 7 Aden Chur (Granite Hills) at 157; and defending state champion and No. 1 in the nation Mario Carini (Poway) vs. No. 35 Marcelino Nono (Valhalla) in a rematch of last year’s final. Keep an eye on No. 33 Ethan Vinoray (Patrick Henry) at 126; No. 4 Matty Orbeta (Poway) at 138; No. 4 Mason Carnrite (Poway) at 165; No. 3 Moylan (Poway) at 215; and No. 5 Noah Larios (Imperial) at 285.

Defending team champion: Poway
Individual Masters champions returning: Isabella Fodera (Poway, 100), Ava Fodera (Poway, 105), Ava Ebrahimi (Poway, 120), Lauren Zaragoza (Brawley, 135), Mary Snider (Rancho Bernardo, 140), Natalia Righellis (Olympian, 155), Diana Duarte (San Marcos, 190), Elisa Najera (Olympian, 235).
Notable: Three of the four sectionals came down to the last heavyweight final. Defending champion Poway qualified nine girls and three defending champions. Brawley, winners of three of the first five Masters tournaments, edged Poway in Division 2. Olympian, Mira Mesa, Rancho Bernardo, Steele Canyon and San Marcos are always in the mix. Top individuals in the field include defending state champion Zaragosa (Brawley) at 135; state runners-up No. 3 Ava Fodera (Poway) 105 and No. 2 Snider (Rancho Bernardo) 140; and fifth-place state medalist No. 4 Ebrahimi (Poway) 120; and seventh-place medalist No. 5 Noemi Cordero (Poway) 110. Olympian’s Najera, Brawley’s Madison Vandiver and Ramona’s Robin Moore will battle it out for the 235-pound crown.
