Sacramento Housing and Redevelopment Agency officials say they will continue to provide rental subsidies to over 13,500 families.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Sacramento families who rely on federal housing vouchers won’t see disruptions to their rental subsidies for now, despite the ongoing federal government shutdown.

Sacramento Housing and Redevelopment Agency officials say they will continue to provide rental subsidies to over 13,500 families who rely on them to keep a roof over their heads.

“Our main goal is to continue uninterrupted operations with minimal effect on residents and the community, particularly when many families are having difficulty making ends meet with the current state of our economy,” the agency said in a statement.

Officials added that if the shutdown continues, they would start to explore contingency plans dependent on future funding.

“We are operating on the latest notification from HUD that funding obligations will support our program through the end of the year,” the agency said.

For other local housing authorities, funding should be available until at least mid-November, according to the California Apartment Association.

Those funds cover the government’s portion of the housing vouchers. It’s essential to note that landlords cannot evict tenants due to delayed payments of the government’s portion of the rent.

It is also illegal, under California law, to refuse to rent to people who use federal housing vouchers during a government shutdown.
