There was a watch party at Oakland’s Ice Rink Thursday, where dozens watched as Alysa Liu earned a gold medal at the 2026 Winter Olympics.

Inside the watch party, young skaters said they were excited and inspired to skate the same ice Liu does.

Those here who have known, or known of, Liu for years say seeing her succeed on the world’s biggest stage is both a thrill and a relief.

Liu became the first U.S. female figure skater to win Olympic gold since 2002. In the town, supporters say they never doubted that she’d win.
