SHASTA COUNTY, Calif. — Up to 17 big rigs and other vehicles were involved in a deadly pileup on Interstate 5 near Lakehead on Tuesday afternoon, causing significant delays for travelers during winter weather conditions.

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) said its officers were notified of the crash on southbound I-5 near Gilman Road at 3:05 p.m. Following the crash, the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) announced a closure of all southbound lanes between Salt Creek Road and Gilman Road for several hours.

According to CHP, one person, identified as a 49-year-old man from Monterey Park, driving a 2025 Toyota, suffered fatal injuries in the crash.
