Oakland Zoo announced the birth of a red-tailed monkey baby, the first newborn of its kind at the park, with recently released footage showing a mom and her adorable baby.
In a press release, the zoo said, “Nonami (mother) and Marley (father), our resident red-tailed guenons, welcomed a male offspring earlier this month. This milestone marks the first birth of a guenon monkey at Oakland Zoo.”
The zoo added that the mother and baby were “thriving.”
“He is nursing and bonding normally with Nonami, and she is ensuring the baby stays close. As a veteran mom, Nonami has successfully given birth at her previous zoo to two other females who also live at Oakland Zoo: Ikea and Skittles,” the zoo said.
According to the zoo’s website, red-tailed monkeys are characterized by their “pronounced cheek pouches that are stuffed with food during foraging. They don a white or yellow nose against a blue-gray face, white cheek tufts and a long, red tail measuring up to 36 inches which measures twice their body length.” Credit: Oakland Zoo via Storyful
