GREEN BAY (WLUK) — Green Bay men’s basketball picked up an important win Friday night, beating Oakland 73-68.
The win not only moved the Phoenix solely into second place in the Horizon League standings, but showed they could win without their head coach present.
Doug Gottlieb did not coach the Phoenix in the game because he was serving a one-game suspension for his comments following Green Bay’s loss to Milwaukee last weekend.
Assistant coach Kerry Rupp served as acting head coach in win. At 71 years old, Rupp became the second oldest coach in the nation to get a win this year, according to Green Bay athletics.
Justin Allen led all scorers with 21 points to go along with five assists and four rebounds.
The Phoenix had previously lost to Oakland 88-63 on Jan. 18, their second-largest conference loss so far this season.
With the victory, Green Bay sits solely in second place in the conference with an 11-7 record, currently 2.5 games behind first place Wright State.
Two games remain in the regular season for the Phoenix with the Horizon League men’s and women’s tournaments beginning March 2.
