Fresno, California – Temperatures across the San Joaquin Valley are dropping toward 28 degrees overnight, threatening citrus, almond and other sensitive crops through early Saturday.

According to the National Weather Service in Hanford, a Freeze Warning remains in effect until 9 a.m. Saturday for much of central California, including Fresno, Bakersfield, Visalia, Hanford and Merced. Sub-freezing lows as cold as 28 degrees are expected across valley communities from Los Banos to Delano. The prolonged cold could damage unprotected outdoor plumbing and kill tender vegetation.

Farmers in Kings, Tulare and Kern counties are urged to run frost protection measures and monitor irrigation systems. Residential areas may also see patchy frost on exposed surfaces before sunrise both Friday and Saturday mornings.

Farther north, the National Weather Service in Medford has issued a Freeze Warning from 1 a.m. to 9 a.m. Friday for the southern Oregon coast, including Coos Bay, Bandon and Brookings, where temperatures could dip as low as 25 degrees inland and near freezing along the immediate coast.

Residents should cover plants, protect pipes and bring pets indoors. Additional freeze headlines could be extended if clear skies and calm winds persist into the weekend.
