SANTA CLARITA, CA — A Santa Clarita pizza restaurant was evacuated Sunday after several explosions occurred beneath the restaurant.
The Los Angeles County Fire Department responded at 12:06 p.m. Sunday to reports of a vault explosion outside Toppers Pizza at 23710 Valencia Blvd. Firefighters then reported hearing additional explosions at 12:14 and 12:16 p.m., authorities said.
The explosions were caused by an electrical vault located on the sidewalk in front of the restaurant, authorities confirmed.
The explosions were caused by exposed wires underground that interacted with rainwater, the Santa Clarita Valley Signal reported.
Southern California Edison was notified at 12:21 p.m. and responded to investigate and fix any issues.
Firefighters said there were no reports of smoke or fire, and no apparent injuries.
A California Highway Patrol spokesperson said the situation cold have been much worse, KHTS reported.
“We got lucky on it,” Michael Nasir said. “A few explosions in the vault, but the fire department is able to keep the scene safe. Edison is working their magic now.”
The restaurant was evacuated and power in the surrounding area was shut off. An employee at Toppers Pizza said that the restaurant would remain closed for the rest of the day.
