Radu Paponiu, who is presently Wattis Foundation Music Director of the San Francisco Symphony Youth Orchestra (SFSYO), has extended his contract until the close of the 2028–29 season. Paponiu, who was first appointed in September 2024, currently leads the orchestra in four concerts each year.
Recognized as one of the finest youth orchestras in the world, the SFSYO comprises more than 100 musicians aged between 12 and 21, all of whom hail from across the Bay Area. The orchestra’s work is fully subsidized and works to a pre-professional caliber, including weekly rehearsals.
Previously Associate Conductor of the Naples Philharmonic and Music Director of the Naples Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, Paponiu has also served as music director of the Southwest Florida Symphony Orchestra.
As a guest conductor, he has led the Romanian National Radio Symphony, Teatro Comunale di Bologna Orchestra, Rhode Island Philharmonic, Transylvania State Philharmonic Orchestra, Banatul Philharmonic, Louisiana Philharmonic, Rockford Symphony, Colorado Music Festival Orchestra, North Carolina Symphony, California Young Artists Symphony, and National Repertory Orchestra.
Paponiu originally studied the violin with Robert Lipsett at the Colburn Conservatory, then went on to study conducting with Hugh Wolff at the New England Conservatory, where he also completed a conducting apprenticeship with the Handel and Haydn Society.
“I am delighted to continue this journey with the outstanding young musicians of the San Francisco Symphony Youth Orchestra,” Paponiu said. “On every occasion, their talent, passion, and dedication have been a source of inspiration and a glimpse into a bright musical future. I am equally grateful to the extraordinary faculty and staff whose commitment makes this program possible. I look forward to building on our work together and continuing to nurture an environment where these remarkable young artists can thrive.”
