LOS ANGELES, CA — An man in his 80s was killed Tuesday in a fire at a home in Beverly Grove.

Firefighters responded at 4:03 a.m. Tuesday to 812 N. Crescent Heights Blvd., between Willoughby and Waring avenues, according to Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Capt. Erik Scott.

Crews found an 85-year-old woman outside. She was treated at the scene and transported to a local hospital in fair condition, KTLA reported.

Firefighters had to use a rotary saw to cut through metal bars on the home’s doors and windows, Scott said.

“Inside, there ended up being an 85-year-old man that we pulled out,” Scott told KTLA. “They did a great job of providing every sort of medical effort they could from advanced life support, but we transported that individual in grave condition to a local hospital, where tragically (he was) pronounced dead.”

The victims were a married couple who had lived in the home for 50 years, KTLA reported.

It took 54 firefighters 42 minutes to extinguish the flames, according to the LAFD.

Scott said parts of the home’s interior were cluttered, making the firefight more difficult.

No working smoke detectors were found inside the home. Scott urged residents to check their own detectors.

The department’s Arson Section will be in charge of investigating the cause of the fire, as is standard in the case of a fatal fire.
