Long Beach City College has unveiled a new building — aimed at supporting certain career pathways and bolstering the city’s Space Beach industry — on its Trades, Technology and Community Learning Campus.

Leaders from the college gathered on the campus, 1305 E. Pacific Coast Highway, to unveil the new Building MM on Wednesday, Feb. 25.

The project was completed in two phases, according to LBCC. The original facility, built in the 1950s, was demolished and later completely rebuilt to afford students a fully modernized educational complex.

The Building MM complex, LBCC said, will house various programs in construction trades, including architecture, carpentry, horticulture, HVAC and plant science.

“Designed to meet current industry technology standards,” LBCC said, “the buildings feature advanced manufacturing learning spaces that provide students with hands-on training aligned with high-demand workforce needs.”

The $50 million project was paid for with Measure E and Measure LB bonds, alongside state funding, LBCC said.

“This investment directly improves how students learn and train,” LBCC Superintendent-President Mike Muñoz said in a news release. “The new classrooms and labs are designed to support applied instruction and current industry practices. Students gain experience with modern equipment and hands-on training that prepares them to enter the workforce with marketable skills and confidence.”

The new building, LBCC said, will also help the college support its programs related to “Space Beach.” Space Beach is the name city leaders have given to Long Beach’s growing aerospace industry.

The city’s relationship with that industry dates back decades, but has recently been revitalized with several new companies — including Rocket Lab, Vast Space, Relativity Space and Anduril, among others — moving in or announcing plans to relocate to Long Beach.

“As we continue to grow our Space Beach, we must connect students to real opportunities in aerospace, advanced manufacturing, construction, and sustainable technologies,” said LBCC Board of Trustees President Uduak-Joe Ntuk. “Voter-approved bond funding allows us to invest in facilities that support workforce development and long-term economic growth for our entire community.”
