OAKLAND, Maine —

Police say they seized nearly four and a half pounds of cocaine during a traffic stop in Oakland, Maine.

The Maine Drug Enforcement Agency said Thursday they have been investigating suspected drug trafficking involving Edwin Lawrence, 24, of Vassalboro, from a home on Webber Pond Road in Vassalboro for the last eight months.

On Wednesday, agents learned that Lawrence was on his way back to Maine and likely had a lot of drugs with him.

At about 8 p.m., Maine State Police spotted Lawrence headed north on Interstate 295 and tried to stop him just north of the tolls in West Gardiner, but say Lawrence drove off.

Police were able to pop the tires on Lawrence’s vehicle in Oakland, but say he then ran from the vehicle. He was quickly arrested with help from a State Police K-9.

When police and agents searched the vehicle, they say they found over 2,000 grams of cocaine, worth about $127,000 on the street, and more than $1,000 in suspected drug money.

Agents then got a warrant to search the home on Webber Pond Road, but say they did not find any more evidence there.

Lawrence was arrested and charged with aggravated trafficking in Schedule W drugs, eluding a police officer, and refusing to submit to arrest or detention.

Bail was set at $92,000 and was being held at the Kennebec County Correctional Facility on Thursday, pending an initial court appearance.

Police said more arrests are expected.
