FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — The teen boy prosecutors say shot and killed Caleb Quick at a Clovis McDonald’s last April returned to court on Thursday.

His hearing, which was closed to cameras, lasted three minutes. He had long, curly hair and wore a purple shirt.

Prosecutors want him moved to adult criminal court, where the punishment is longer. The high-stakes transfer hearing, however, was delayed again after the judge granted attorneys on both sides more time.
But the judge granted attorneys more time, not yet setting that high-stakes transfer hearing…

“(We’re) unlikely to have a transfer hearing as of today,” Stephen Quick said. “It’s 309 days since my son was taken from me, but I’m still hopeful that’s going to happen.”

Quick believes the boy and the girl, who is the alleged getaway driver, should be tried as adults.

“These two individuals anticipated taking the life of my son,” he said.

The teens have each denied murder charges.

Through it all in court on Thursday, the boy paid close attention. At one point, he told the judge, “I’m good.”

“Would you like a phone call?” the judge asked.

“Yes, sir,” the boy responded. To “my mom.”

“I would love a phone call with my son, and I’m not getting that because of these two individuals,” Quick said about the suspect’s request.

He still listens to his son’s voice.

“I’ve got voicemails that I’ve saved since he’s been gone that I still listen to,” Quick said. “I would love a phone call with him.”

It is now nearly one year since the shooting, and Thursday’s setback all but guarantees the boy’s transfer hearing will be after the first anniversary.

The girl’s transfer hearing is likely to happen days before the anniversary. It is set for April 13.

“It would really be disheartening for the community if either of these two would be, you know, retained in the juvenile system (where) they’re out in four to five years for committing such a heinous crime,” Quick said.
