Fresno city councilmember Annalisa Perea says she plans to create legislation that would prevent a registered sex offender from running for council.

Fresno resident Rene Campos, who is a registered sex offender, told Action News earlier this week he plans to run for the District 7 seat.

That district includes Old Fig Garden, east central Fresno, and parts of southeast Fresno.

Campos would join a crowded field vying for the seat when Councilman Nelson Esparza’s term runs out.

“I know several of my colleagues share similar feelings and I look forward to bringing forth legislation to limit somebody’s ability to serve publicly if they do carry that badge on them,” councilmember Perea said.

Fresno County Clerk and Registrar of Voters James Kus says state law does not prevent a registered sex offender from running for office.

Campos has not yet filed, but has until March 6 to submit his paperwork.

The primary election is June 2.
