Fire Chief Griff Skellie told WLOX News Now that a contractor working on a new hotel on Jeff Davis Avenue hit the line while digging with an excavator.
Skellie said the locations of underground utilities at the construction site had been properly marked, but the excavator came too close.
Firefighters checked nearby businesses for a gas smell and determined that only a nearby title company needed to evacuate.
