Some eastbound lanes of Highway 50 in downtown Sacramento will be closed from late Friday, Feb. 27, 2026, to early Monday, March 2, 2026, due to construction, according to Caltrans. The construction is a part of an ongoing $511.1 million project aimed to add carpool lanes and rehabilitate 14 miles of pavement.

Motorists making their way into downtown Sacramento could face delays this weekend due to construction that will trigger lane closures on the elevated W-X Freeway carrying Highway 50.
The two rightmost lanes of the eastbound Capital City Freeway between Sixth and Eighth Street will be closed from 10 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday as workers remove and replace the bridge deck joint seal assembly on the overpass, Caltrans District 3 said in a news release. The work is above the lot that hosts the Sacramento Farmers Market every Sunday morning.
The construction is a part the ongoing “Fix 50” project to add carpool lanes and resurface aging pavement between I-5 and just east of Watt Avenue. The project, which began in 2021 and has faced delays and rising costs, remains on track for a July completion, Caltrans officials said, a year later than originally planned.
The project’s estimated cost has also increased. Caltrans currently lists the price at about $511.1 million. In May 2022, the agency estimated the cost at $433 million — an increase of roughly $78.1 million. In June 2025, Caltrans had estimated the project would cost about $529 million.
A Caltrans District 3 spokesperson previously told The Bee that most of the traffic-impacting construction work was expected to be finished by December, with remaining electrical, landscaping and aesthetic work continuing into the summer.
One of two lanes on the southbound Interstate 5 connector to eastbound Highway 50 will also close during the weekend work, and a lane shift will be put in place between the northbound I-5 connector and the W-X.
The speed limit has been reduced to 55 mph in the area and motorists should expect delays during the closure, officials said.
