Legendary singer-songwriter Neil Sedaka has died at age 86, his family confirmed to NBC4 Investigates Friday.

“Our family is devastated by the sudden passing of our beloved husband, father and grandfather, Neil Sedaka,” the family said in a statement to NBC Los Angeles. “A true rock and roll legend, an inspiration to millions, but most importantly, at least to those of us who were lucky enough to know him, an incredible human being who will be deeply missed.”

The prolific musician’s career spanned more than six decades with some of his recognized works include “Breaking Up Is Hard To Do,” “Calendar Girl” and “Happy Birthday Sweet Sixteen.”

Sedaka was also the original singer of “Love Will Keep Us Together,” which later became a worldwide hit by Captain & Tennile.

This is a developing story.
