BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — A man is dead after police say he was lying on the roadway along 24th Street and was struck by a car Friday night. An investigation is underway as police believe other vehicles may be involved.

The Bakersfield Police Department said on February 27, 2026, at around 7:28 p.m., officers were called to the 2000 block of 24th Street regarding a check on the welfare of person lying in the roadway.

When officers arrived, they found a man dead in the roadway.

Bakersfield police said the preliminary investigation found that the driver of a Toyota Corolla was traveling westbound in the 2000 block of 24th Street when he struck the pedestrian who was lying in the roadway for unknown reasons.

The driver of the Corolla returned to the scene and cooperated with the investigation.

Police said speed and impairment were not factors in the crash involving the pedestrian and the Corolla; however, the investigation is ongoing as other vehicles are believed to be involved in the crash.
