FRESNO, Calif. (FOX26) — Fresno City Councilmember Mike Karbassi released a statement regarding the attack on Iran.

Karbasi stated he does not comment on international affairs as his responsibility is to Fresno.

However, due to his background and the community questioning, he shared the following response.

Karbasi stated, “For decades, the Iranian regime has inflicted profound harm, not only across the Middle East and around the world, but most tragically upon its own people.”

He continued, “In recent weeks, we’ve seen tens of thousands of unarmed citizens persecuted, imprisoned, and killed for demanding basic freedoms: freedom of speech, freedom of assembly, and freedom of conscience.”

He said, “My heart is with the brave men and women of the United States Armed Forces in harm’s way.”

This is a moment that carries risk. Before the 1979 revolution, Iran and the United States were close allies. There was a partnership, shared interests, and hope for stability and prosperity.

I remain hopeful that one day a free Iran can stand as a Friend of the United States, securing freedom for the Iranian people and strengthening security for the American people.

He concluded, “The Iranian people deserve the same blessing of liberty that we cherish in America. I believe in a future where democracy prevails, tyranny gives way to freedom, and peace is built through shared values.”
