SACRAMENTO — Martin Duris, Freddie Healey, Nick Bowles and David Dai each won their singles matches to highlight the Hornets’ 5-2 victory over Weber State on Saturday afternoon on campus.
This afternoon marked the Big Sky Conference opener for both teams, and Sacramento State improved to 6-4 overall and 1-0 in league play. The Hornets have now won three straight, and four of their last five matches. Weber State dropped to 1-7 overall and 0-1 in the Big Sky.
The Hornets have defeated Weber State at home on six straight occasions, and haven’t lost to the Wildcats on the Sacramento State campus since 2014.
One of the youngest teams in the Big Sky, the Hornets played today’s match with two freshmen, three sophomores and one junior in the singles lineup. Sacramento State does not have a senior on the roster.
Duris (No. 1) and Healey (No. 3) both win straight sets, while Bowles (No. 4) and Dai (No. 5) won in three sets.Both Bowles and Dai have now won three straight singles matches.
The Hornets also secured the doubles point with wins by Doni Gashi/Healey at No. 2, and Duris/Sebastian Vlahos at No. 3.
Sacramento State will co-host the Golden State Invitational with UC Davis next Friday-Saturday. The Hornets will play just one match during the tournament, and that will come Friday vs. Hawaii at 2 p.m.
