Re “Escondido keeps ICE contract despite community pleas” (Feb. 25): Kudos to the Escondido City Council for maintaining the city’s contract with the Department of Homeland Security for use of a city training facility. It is refreshing to see a city government act with common sense and rationality, not emotion. And shame on San Diego Councilmember Marni von Wilpert for politically grandstanding and inserting herself into another city’s business.

Let me get this straight: Some elected leaders don’t want Escondido to take $22,500 a year from ICE so its officers can train at the city’s firing range. Regardless of one’s feelings about ICE conduct, who is better off if its officers don’t get training they need? Who thinks Escondido has so much money to spend that it should give up $22,500 a year so that we have less well-trained ICE officers?
