BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — The Tehachapi City Council could appoint a new council member on Monday, according to the meeting agenda.

Councilman Michael Davies, who represented District 3, resigned Jan. 20. His term was set to expire after the November 2028 election, according to the agenda.

The new member appointed by the City Council will only serve until the November 2026 election. The elected candidate will fill in at that point, city officials said.

The city only received one application for this current appointment from Marianna Gutierrez, a resident and registered voter of District 3.

Gutierrez is a real estate agent in Tehachapi and has been serving as the city treasurer since 2022, according to the application.

She is enrolled in the Nursing program at Unitek College in Bakersfield and has a bachelor’s in Psychology from Cal State Northridge.

“I want to be a council member who is accessible, practical, and focused on balanced progress — protecting the small-town character we love while planning responsibly for infrastructure, safety, and economic opportunity,” Gutierrez said in a letter to the City Council.

“District 3 deserves a representative who listens first, communicates clearly, and makes decisions with long-term community impact in mind.”

If the City Council appoints Gutierrez on Monday, she would be sworn in at the meeting and finish the meeting as a council member.

The City Council is set to meet at 6 p.m. March 2 in the Tehachapi Police Department Emergency Operations Center at 220 W. C St.
