The Coachella Valley Firebirds picked up a hard-fought 3-2 shootout victory over the Bakersfield Condors tonight at Acrisure Arena.
The Firebirds came out strong, jumping to an early 2-0 lead with goals from Tyson Jugnauth and Jani Nyman. But Bakersfield battled back, eventually tying the game to force overtime.
After a scoreless overtime period, the game moved to a shootout, where Eduard Šalé delivered the decisive goal to seal the win for Coachella Valley.
Head coach Derek Laxdal said while the victory wasn’t the team’s cleanest performance, he was pleased with how his players competed and stayed composed under pressure. He also credited goaltender Niklas Kokko for keeping the game within reach during key moments.
Laxdal praised the team’s resilience, noting they built an early lead, weathered Bakersfield’s push, and ultimately finished the job in the shootout.
With the win secured, the Firebirds now turn their attention to their next matchup Wednesday night on the road against the Henderson Silver Knights.
